Rolling Hills Farm
Hello! Some people may remember from my second blog post that I talked about a book I’m writing, called Rolling Hills, Illinois. I thought I would tweak your interest up, so below I have put a few of the paragraphs from the first chapter as a teaser. I hope you enjoy!
The Spencer Family
1
Rolling Hills, Illinois is a medium sized town, with a lot of good farmland in it. At least, that’s what Jake Spencer had heard from one of his friends in Baskerville, Wyoming. He and his family had a horse farm there. The Spencer family consisted of Jake, his wife Jacqueline (better known as Jackie), and their two children, Elizabeth, and Daniel (better known as Danny). Elizabeth is twelve years old, and Danny is ten. However, there will soon be another Spencer. That’s right! Jackie is pregnant. The Spencers are expecting a little girl in just eight weeks. So, Jake is trying to get the process of moving done soon, so that they will be all settled in before the big day. This is why Jake was talking
his friend about Rolling Hills. He was going to move his family to Illinois. And he is walking into his house right now to tell his family he found a location.
“Jackie! Kids! I’m home!” Jake called as he walked into the house.
“In the family room, honey!” Came the response from Jackie. As Jake walked into the room, he figured out what he would say. When he went in, Jackie was lying on the couch with her feet up, Elizabeth was reading a book in the armchair, and Danny was nowhere to be seen.
“Where’s Danny, Elizabeth?” He asked his daughter.
“Oh, hey, Dad. I think he said he was going out to the barn to say hi to the horses. Do you want me to go get him?”
Jake nodded, and said, “Thanks, honey.” As Elizabeth walked out of the room, he went over to sit with Jackie.
“Danny!” Elizabeth called softly as she walked into the barn. A brown mop of hair poked out from one of the horse stalls. “Dad’s home, and he wants to have a family meeting. My guess is it’s about the move. Let’s go, hurry. I want to hear what he has to say!” Elizabeth told her brother.
“Ok, I’ll put Dusty back in his stall, and meet you in the house,” he replied. While Elizabeth went to get Danny, Jake was telling Jackie his news.
As Elizabeth came back into the room with Danny, Jackie sat up and said, “Have a seat, kids. Your father and I have some news about the move we talked about.” Danny sat down in the saucer chair, and Elizabeth got back into the armchair.
“So, I’ve been to the real estate office again today, and it looks like we’ve found some land.” Jake said. “There is a decent piece of farmland in the place I told you about, Rolling Hills, in northern Illinois. It’s up for sale, and it already has a house and barn on the land. 60 acres. The earliest time we could move would be in two weeks. What do you think?”
