Camp Calvary
By Alexandra J. Whitney
Camp Calvary, founded in 1974 by Calvary Baptist Church, Lansdale, Pa. is a Christian camp located in Bernville, Pa. Even through the hardships of the coronavirus, they are finding ways for kids to safely attend camp and minister to them. Some of the precautions Camp Calvary will be taking this year to make it safe are: pretty much all day every day, everybody is required wear a buff over their mouth and nose to protect the people around them. These buffs are provided by the camp, and they are blue with the camp’s logo in white all over it. Also, they are limiting the number of campers in the whole camp, and in the cabins. The limitation for the camp is one hundred campers, six campers per cabin. The staff is sanitizing things before and after uses, and they are also taking safety precautions for events. When attending indoor services, everyone must stay socially distant, although they are trying to keep it limited to outdoor services.
This is an incredible camp, and the steps they are taking to protect their staff and campers are wonderful. Their mission statement is, “Camp Calvary is a Christ-centered, camper-conscious ministry utilizing the outdoors to evangelize the lost and edify the believer.”
Genealogy
By Alexandra J. Whitney
Jean Remi Remont (daguerreotype, c. 1870). Remont immigrated to the United States together with his wife, Julia in 1837 in the employ of Col. John Hare Powel of Philadelphia, Pa. and Newport, R. I.
Genealogy is an interest and hobby for many people, including Jeff Fears of Salisbury, Maryland. He says that he is interested in genealogy because he wants to find out more about the family legacy. It is like an unfinished puzzle to him, among others. One of the projects he is working on right now is about his third great-grandfather, named Jean Remi Remont. Remont was born in Pareid, France, on October 31, 1801, and died in Philadelphia, Pa. on January 3, 1878. He was buried in the Mount Moriah Cemetery in Philadelphia. A fun fact about Remont is that while in Europe, he was hired by Colonel John Hare Powell. If you study genealogy, you will find out many things about your family heritage, and everybody should know as much as possible about their family heritage. It is like studying history, only better, because it is your own history.
